Holter monitor is a portable electrocardiography (ECG, EKG) device for continuous monitoring cordial electrical activity over a recording period of at least 24 to 48 hours.  It allows assessing the blood supply to the cordial muscle, heart beat rate and heart rhythm over time.   Such monitoring allows identifying, and in many cases preventing, the development of cardiovascular diseases, such as arrythmia (heart rhythm disturbance).

Holter monitoring is indispensable in cases when heart rhythm disturbances occur episodically and may not be detected with standard ECG (EKG).
